Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Nitrostat (nitroglycerin) is the gold standard when it comes to treating angina. It is typically prescribed to patients with coronary artery disease, a condition in which the inner walls of arteries become clogged with plaque, causing a narrow passage for blood and making the artery rigid.

This condition can cause the heart to be deprived of oxygen during moments of physical activity or emotional turmoil. Patients buy Nitrostat to alleviate the effects of constricted, rigid blood vessels; the medication both relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow.

Nitrostat works very quickly, within 5 minutes of administration.

Taking Control of Angina

Ideally Nitrostat will be used according to doctor instructions. However, doctor instructions rarely deviate much from the standard treatment.

The medication comes in tablets, which should be dissolved in the mouth, either under the tongue or in the buccal pouch (between the gums and inner lining of the cheek). Tablets should not be swallowed, and are ideally taken from a resting position, ideally sitting down.

As mentioned above there are two ways this medication is used, as a preventative treatment or to manage ongoing angina. Both cases can be treated with the same medication, regardless of what you buy Nitrostat for, though there are some minor differences in using the medication.

To prevent angina from occurring:

  • Administer one Nitrostat about 5 to 10 minutes prior to physical activity or other scenario in which angina is likely.

To stop angina that is occurring:

  • Administer one Nitrostat.
  • After 5 minutes, administer a second, if needed.
  • After 5 minutes, administer a third, if needed.
  • If chest pain has not stopped after the third dose, seek emergency medical attention.
  • If chest pain has worsened after the first dose, seek emergency medical attention.

Ideally the smallest dose that provides benefit should be used to prevent tolerance, and similarly the medication should only be used when needed. For some patients, however, it can be difficult to tell when chest pain is angina or something else, like indigestion. Patients will want to err on the side of safety until the situation is understood.

Precautions & Side Effects

Patients planning to buy Nitrostat should be aware of the serious and not-so-serious complications that can develop. The most-commonly reported side effect from Nitrostat is actually a sign the medication is working: headache. Headaches can be treated with over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen once the Nitrostat has worked. If headaches are persistant or very severe, consult a doctor.

Other relatively minor side effects, that don't call for medical attention unless very severe or persistent, include:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Flushing
  • Nausea
  • Burning or tingling under the tongue

Very rarely more serious side effects occur, which warrant medical attention:

  • Fainting
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Pounding heartbeat
  • Irregular heartbeat

Nitrostat is known to interact with a few other medications, most notably:

  • Alcohol
  • Aspirin
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Anticholinergics
  • Ergotamine
  • PDE-5 inhibitors

Patients taking ergotamine and PDE-5 inhibitors (Cialis, Viagra, and so forth) should not take Nitrostat. The others can be used with caution after discussing potential risks with a doctor.
